  • Our search system for Australian patent data provides a single point to search for information on Australian patents. It allows you to: search for applications via quick, structured or advanced search options; use a range of search options, such as searching by patent number or inventor name.
  • The European Patent Register is available free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is not intended for bulk data retrieval and users are limited to ten search-related actions per minute. The service does not support automated searches (robots) and will deny access to any robots it identifies.
  • Patent Application Numbers start with a two digit series number and a six digit serial number. Series numbers increase when the six digit serial number hits 999999. (In the case of older pre-2001 patents where the series number begins with 1-9 the leading 0 is missing.).
  • The patent number they use for applications are of a different formats depending on the type of patent application and the year it was made. After the 5 th of July 2002 IP Australia changed to a ten digit number; this number for the patent application will also be the final number of the patent if approved.

History: Granting of patents for inventions made a function ofthe Federal Government by Article I, section 8, of theConstitution. Patent Board, consisting of Secretary of State,Secretary of War, and Attorney General, established by the PatentAct of 1790 (1 Stat. 109), April 10, 1790. Abolished by thePatent Act of 1793 (1 Stat. 318), February 21, 1793, withresponsibility for issuing patents given to Secretary of State.Superintendent of Patents appointed by Secretary of State, 1802.Superintendent of Patents and staff, collectively called thePatent Office, functioned in immediate office of the Secretary ofState, 1802-36. By the Patent Act of 1836 (5 Stat. 117), July 4,1836, Patent Office established as a separate organization withinthe Department of State, with a Commissioner of Patents at itshead. SEE 241.3.

Note: Patent records predating 1836 were unnumbered and could beaccessed only by name of patentee and date of patent. After 1836,unique numbers assigned by the Patent Office distinguished eachnew patent.

Most original patent records were destroyed by fire, December 15,1836. Reconstruction of the records was authorized by the PatentAct of 1837 (5 Stat. 191), March 3, 1837, which permittedinventors who had letters patent either to submit the originals,or certified copies of the originals, to the Patent Office; or,in the absence of documentation, to create a new patent documentfurnished under oath as conforming to original drawings andspecifications. Arbitrary numbers suffixed with 'X' were assignedby the Patent Office to the restored drawings and specifications.

Textual Records: Copies, made 1839-87, of certificates describingpatents ('Patent Heads') granted between 1794 and 1835.Specifications, copied 1837-83, relating to original and reissuedpatents granted before 1837. Copies, made 1837-47, relating topatents granted before 1837.
